Economic Impact Payments, Child Tax Credits, and Other Refundable Tax Credits

Thank you for visiting our web page about economic impact payments (EIP), the Child Tax Credit, and other refundable tax credits. We will tell you how to get any missing EIPs, also referred to as stimulus payments, and claim the Child Tax Credit and other refundable tax credits from the IRS if you did not file a tax return in 2020. If you filed a tax return for 2020, you do not need to do anything else.

Important: Did you know?

How Can I Get Missing Economic Impact Payments?

The IRS has already issued stimulus payments to most individuals who get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security retirement, disability, or survivors benefits. If you did not get a first or second EIP for you or someone in your household including dependents, or if you got less than the full amount, you may be eligible to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit by using the Non-Filer Sign-up Tool as soon as possible.

This updated tool is designed to help eligible individuals who don't normally file income tax returns register for the third round of EIPs and claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit for the first two rounds of EIPs they may have missed. While most Social Security recipients were paid EIPs automatically, family members were not paid automatically unless you previously filed a 2019 or 2020 tax return, or used the Non-Filer tool. Using the Non-Filer Sign-up Tool now will create a 2020 tax return for you automatically. Please remember that you must use the Non-Filer Sign-up Tool as soon as possible.

The IRS will process your tax return and send you any payments for you, an eligible spouse, and your eligible dependents. If you have questions about EIPs, visit www.irs.gov/eip.

How Can I Get the Child Tax Credit?

Get all the benefits you're entitled to under the law, including tax credits such as the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and the Earned Income Tax Credit. Filing a 2020 tax return, or using the Non-Filer Sign-up Tool as soon as possible, will also assist the IRS in determining whether someone is eligible for advance payments of the 2021 Child Tax Credit.

From July through December 2021, Treasury and the IRS will issue advance payments of one half of the estimated 2021 Child Tax Credit to eligible taxpayers who have a main home in the United States for more than half the year. The IRS will calculate the payment based on a person's 2020 tax return, if filed, or if they used the Non-Filer Sign-up Tool.

After you use the tool, you don't need to do anything else to get missing EIPs and the advance payments of the 2021 Child Tax Credit, if eligible. Please remember that you must use the Non-Filer Sign-up Tool as soon as possible.

The IRS is sending separate payments to eligible people for the missing EIPs and advance payments of the 2021 Child Tax Credit.

How Do I File a Tax Return?

If you would not normally file a Federal tax return, you can use the Non-Filer Sign-up Tool to claim missing EIPs and available tax credits. Submitting your information using the tool will create a 2020 tax return for you automatically.

Some people may want or need to file a 2020 tax return for other reasons without using the tool.

If your income is $72,000 or less, you can file a Federal tax return for free through the IRS Free File Program. IRS-certified volunteers can also provide help filing your tax return if you need it. Visit the IRS websites below to get started:

What is the Non-Filer Sign-up Tool?

The Non-Filer Sign-up Tool is a convenient way to claim your Child Tax Credit and missing stimulus payments, or EIPs. The White House and the Department of the Treasury collaborated with the non-profit organization, Code for America, to create this tool. It is available in English and Spanish, and you can use it on your computer, tablet, or smartphone.

By selecting the button below, we will direct you to the Code for America sign-up tool. The tool will ask you several questions to determine if you can use the tool to claim a missing EIP and the Child Tax Credit.
